Opinion Guest Essay

Elle Lokko became the backdrop for a deeply personal Opinion Guest Essay by Swedish-Eritrean photographer and visual reporter Malin Fezehai. In text and photographs, Fezehai retraced her journey of hair, heritage, and identity — a story anchored by her transformative meeting with the British-Ghanaian hairstylist Charlotte Mensah in the mid-1990s.

Shot on location at Elle Lokko, the essay wove together themes of belonging, diaspora, and generational connection, echoing the store’s own ethos of providing a space where global and local narratives meet. The feature marked one of the rare moments where the New York Times situated its storytelling within Ghana’s creative landscape, underscoring Elle Lokko as both a cultural site and a lens through which broader stories of Black womanhood and resilience can be seen.
